Saturday’s Barrel Tastings
All day Friday I was wondering how the next day would go. We’re one of five wineries who had advertised this weekend being “Spring barrel tasting weekend”, it’s also Wine-Thirty wine club pickup weekend and we also had a bus group scheduled to come out during open tasting hours. I wasn’t panicking or getting my occasional heart palpasations (sp?) like I sometimes do when stress overwhelms me since we’ve had busier days scheduled but just the unknown curiousity of how many will come out got me thinking. So Friday I prepped a bit and made sure to wash several more boxes of glasses. Sidenote here: We order 288 wine glasses in the spring every year and this past year when we first received the glasses, a few of us noticed a stink overwhelming the room. ugh gross. Where was it coming from?? Eventually we realized it was coming from the glasses and the boxes they arrived in. After some research, I learned that along with the great prices that are offered thru certain glass companies, you also get this stink…if it’s coming from China. The company said that that’s the reason why…they have no control over where the glasses are stored and shipped…the cardboard used, etc. Thank God we washed them before using them and I’ll remember this every time I order glasses. I had some tasting room guests tell me yesterday that a particular winery they just visited had run out of glasses so they were bringing out new ones and they stunk like rotten chicken and had a strange film on the glass…..if this happens to you just make sure to at least have it washed out with soap…and tell the tasting room manager.
Anyways, the day was a great day in the tasting room. I was psyched to see so many familiar faces coming in as well as new ones. Everyone LOVED the Petit Verdot out of the barrel! We’ve been taking some pre-release orders. Be patient though….it still needs more time to make love with the barrel. Figuratively speaking, but it makes sense right? Mike rocked the barrel tastings and I was a multi-tasker in the tasting room. We had wonderful “uncle” Gorsky helping out wherever needed and my dad chatting with guests and helping me out here and there. Wine club members picked up their wines and got killer deals on buy one, get half off on our apparel. We sampled some D’arcy’s wine jellies made with our wine and almost sold the rest out. We were pooped at the end of the night saying bye to the last visitors at 6 and finished cleaning up. Not in the mood to cook, we ordered some greasy delicious Pizza hut pizza. An occasional treat. Oh, and the bus group of 35 never showed up…hmmm. not sure what happened.
cheers.
