Another Vine Loss at Indian Creek
Last night an unfortunate event happened at the Stowe Vineyard. For the second year in a row we have suffered vine loss. Last year there was a cold snap at the end of October and beginning of November. Although it was not severely cold in those two months, the vines had just lost their leaves and were not prepared for the single digit lows. We lost about 90% of our vines due to the 06/07 winter.
This year was a somewhat different event. Up until now our only worries were a late frost after bud-break which is less than a month away. Although this morning we awoke to a 100% loss in the vineyard. The interesting part of the loss is the fact that the vines are completely gone, unlike last year where there were merely cracks in the trunks. Not only have the vines disappeared but the vineyard posts and trellis wire was lost too. Here is a photo of what was the Stowe Vineyard Pinot Noir.
We don’t suspect the disappearance of the vines was due to any sort of freeze or frost event but there are a few theories:
