Heat, events and morels
Ah the wonderful summer days of trying to get all your outside work done in the mornings or evenings…it’s too bad the mosquitos have the same schedule too. There are quite a few upcoming wine-focused events such as The Basque Wine Festival, The Idaho Wine Festival, The Eagle Food and Wine Festival, Taste of Idaho and Taste of the Harvest. Whoo, you better get these events on your calendar! This is a little late, but Mike and I spent our 4th of July in Warren, Idaho – right off of the landing strip on some land that Mike’s uncle and aunt own (actually, I learned they technically owns the most land in Warren). We spent the weekend foraging for morel shrooms and found some good spots where we brought back a few coolers’ full. We made a recipe I created last year when I first discovered what morels were. Crepes, bacon, chevre, and sauteed morels with our Pinot Noir. Just delish, and we made these at our annual family cabin trip. It was a first taste of morels for many of my family. The Warren area was recovering from last year’s big burn and along with that were these morel hunting camps EVERYWHERE. It was a bit pathetic in my opinion of these forager’s camps….tent after tent after tent, maybe 20 to 30 tents in these camps and quite a few camps throughout the area. Mike and I agreed on our wonderful idea of having out-of-staters permits costing a few grand, while Idahoans only $5. While I’m sure their being here stimulated the McCall economy… their trash, their porta-potties, their numerous toyotas going up and down the dusty dirt roads, their TRAFFIC – vehicles and footprints were in MY way! :)All for these little delicacies called AKA Peckerheads. Teehee. Here is a photo of us on top of warren.
